Using Radio Waves for Pain Relief without Surgery or Down Time
Radiofrequency procedures use radio waves to decrease nerve sensitivity to decrease pain and inflammation due to a disc herniation, sciatica, or nerve injury.
“Radiofrequency procedures can result in substantial pain relief without the risks of surgery.”
Using state of the art technology, the spine and sports specialists at Spine & Sports Medicine of New York accurately diagnose, target, and relieve the source of pain, to get you back to your active lifestyle.
What is a radiofrequency procedure?
An radiofrequency procedure refers to procedures that use radio waves to decrease nerve sensitivity. They consist of radiofrequency rhizotomy (burning of nerves) and pulsed radiofrequency techniques which do not injury the nerve but only decrease its sensitivity. These techniques are used in select nerves that have been identified with specific pain conditions.
After a local skin anesthetic is applied to numb the injection site, a probe is inserted adjacent to the target nerve. To ensure accuracy and safety, our physicians perform the procedure under fluoroscopic guidance, to confirm needle placement. First the target nerve is stimulated to confirm its distribution and location. This is followed by the burning or pulsing of the target nerve.
How long does it take?
Radiofrequency procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. The procedure typically requires one hour, including preparation and recovery time.
How often should this procedure be done?
Radiofrequency procedures are generally done every 6-8 months as needed. In some cases they can provide up to two years of pain-relief.
What are the expected results?
Radiofrequency procedures are very successful in relieving pain. The benefit from these Procedures will typically occur four to six weeks following the procedure. This therapy combined with a routine of strengthening and stretching allows many individuals to enjoy a pain free lifestyle.
